Can sustainable power for events make a difference?

One of the uncomfortable truths about live entertainment is that no matter what people say about their green credentials, the shows that audiences expect to see require a lot of power. In the past this has been supplied through diesel generators that are noisy and polluting. Reclaim Audio and GreenWaves were established to change this. Our first solar powered amplifier is the beginning of the road, but it shows that live entertainment can be driven sustainably.

One way to highlight the impact that this technology can have is to explore the research that is currently going on in this space. Academic studies show the impact sustainable technology can have. One study has shown the 2022 festival scene in Switzerland produced approximately 128,000 tons of CO2. A different piece of research estimated that the carbon footprint of every person at a single music festival is 25kg of CO2.Analysis ina third paper shows that travel accounts for the majority of this footprint, but energy usage for the festival accounts for 13%.

Taking these numbers together, that is 16,640 tons of CO2 that could have been avoided from Switzerland alone. When you multiply this by the number of festivals worldwide, it becomes clear that the ability of GreenWaves amplifiers to make this energy sustainably for entertainment technology will have a huge overall impact.

“The roots of the company are based on the potential found from combining academia and events industry knowhow, and it is important that we use the latest research to understand the potential for change there is out there,” reasoned Reclaim Audio founder, Andrew Bishop. “We can see a massive potential to make a significant environmental impact and we hope the rest of the industry will recognise what we can achieve together.”
